This year our thirty years long appointment with performing arts and theater has found a new shape that doesn't leads us to call it "festival" anymore, but even for us is difficult to define it. It’s a beating organ without body that opens exit and entry routes changing rhythm and form.

Maybe it is a HEART.

APAP LAB at CENTRALE FIES - DRO - 07>09.09.12

If a tree falls in the woods and there’s no one there to hear it, does it make any sound?”

The question that is the aim of the lab “How to reach new audiences? What can artists, organisations do to enlarge the engagement in contemporary arts?” have two different cores. The first one is a real practical question:in fact, if an artist creates art and there’s no one to see it, does it exist? Sure art exists for the artist, but it’s the audience – especially in performing arts – that brings the work to life. And, without an audience, how can an artist ever help to create a sustainable lifestyle? But there is also a more conceptual question that comes out if we re-read the title of the lab carefully. The question hides a precise political point of view and an ethical position, since in the sentence the word “How” means that “reach new audience” is the right thing to do. It's also a clear economic issue, a precice topic to investigate coming from the European Union, and a clear goal from every institution. But to go deeper, we can also notice that in the title we use “audiences” as plural. This means that our goal is to involve different groups of people (young ones, old ones, rural people, football fan?) in contemporary arts. Moreover we can affirm that our big goal is “to involve different type of people in contemporary art is The things to do, and that we are completely sure about that, we just search strategies for our target”. But why are we so sure about that? We have to be really clear on this point. And we cannot allow our self to be nostalgic or idealistic any longer.
